But, but, somehow I survived with a carton of comix. I wasn't "collecting", just go them out sometimes for friends. Stunned a lot of rustics and more than one old hippie had to wipe a tear away. Showed them to Aleuts in bush AK. Crumb wasn't about the 60's, Crumb was the 60's. To me they are a tangible artifact of the zeitgeist, and C umb was part of the geist of the zeit. But then, so ws Robert Crumb. In the late 1950s, when we were all in high school, there were some of us who didn't get enough art in art class, and enough writing in English class. Numerous little magagines sprung up, many using Mad, Panic, and Harvey Kurtzman works in general as a springboard. One of these was FOO!, which was done by Robert and Chuck Crumb.I recall a satire of Tom and Jerry done as a horror movie, in which Tom actually caught Jerry, leaving behind a pile of mouse bones. I and a friend were doing another such work. We corresponded with the Crumbs and others in the field; we were all very young, and had big dreams. As I saw friends slowly starving themnselves to death for the sake of art, I pursued another career. But there was always Robert Crumb out there in the underground comics world, doing much what he'd done before, and getting more vulgar with each new appearance. It's both surprising and gratifiying to see that one of the old bunch has suceeded. |

I'm 47 (born in 1951) and was first introduced to Crumb's work via the _New Times_ underground newspaper at Mesa Community College in Mesa, AZ in 1969. Being an oversheltered cou try girl, I had not seen anything like underground comics before the New Times. The newspaper used the "Truckin Guy," "Mr. Natural," all those big busted/butted ladies, and "Cheap Thrills" as a headlined section of their newspaper. I don't know if Crumb ever did any drawings of Richard Nixon and Spiro Agnew sitting in outhouses with their pants down, but that irreverent drawing is etched in my mind from that newspaper forever. A few years ago I received some freeware graphics which contained a graphic o Mr. Natural in several poses. I've used it a few times and my hippie sister loved it. Do you remember the underground comic entitled "Young Lust"? It was the only other underground I saw in the early 70s. Then my sister had a "religious period" in her life and threw the comic book away. I saw "The Nine Lives of Fritz the Cat," but never saw the original "Fritz the Cat" movie. I would like to buy the original to see with my husband, but I'm afraid Ted Turner, amazon.com, and all the other "establishme t" media corporations have just about erased most of the counterculture books and movies from the 60s and 70s. Heck! I can't even find "The Mouse and His Child"! Anyway, thanks again. I am studying to be a high school English teacher (student teach in Spring 2000) and plan to teach my students about censorship--it's been done for centuries and is still being done today. Thanks for sharing your heart and Crumb's heart with us. |

(Canadian, age 46, so I was around, and in North America, when it was all happening) No, that's not true - I was still in Junior High when it was actually happening, getting top grades and being a good boy. I discovered Crumb - and drugs - in 1968. Finally made it down to San Francisco and Berkeley in 1971, but of course the glory daze of the scene were long long gone. I had to give up Crumb in order to placate various girlfriends over the years (should have given up the girlfriends - eventually I did). When I met my new girlfriend (now wife) five years ago, I was going thru a big Crumb Revival. I was worried that she'd hate him, but soon we sat around chortling and being amazed together. Anyhow, I only started web surfing recently. This is the first (possibly the only) letter I'll leave on a site. I have almost all of Crumb's stuff, so figure I've probably seen most of the museum, but I'm glad it's here. Will come back soon for a closer look. They almost bought my idea (a radio version of his "That's Life" strip that I planned to adapt).
